Frequently Asked Questions

Before Boarding

How to get to Ilha do Mel?
Access is exclusively by boat. The most common route is to go to Pontal do Sul (about 2h from Curitiba, via BR-277 and PR-407), leave the car in one of the paid parking lots and board at the terminal for Nova Brasília or Encantadas — the crossing takes around 30 minutes. There are also departures from Paranaguá, with a longer route.
Are there cars on the island?
No. Ilha do Mel is a preservation area without streets or vehicles — all travel is done on foot, along trails and sand paths. Therefore, bring light luggage and comfortable shoes. Upon disembarking, it is common to use carts to transport bags to the inn.
Is there a limit on visitors?
Yes. Since it is a conservation area, the island has a daily visitor limit controlled by the IAT (Instituto Água e Terra). During the high season and holidays, we recommend arriving early at the boarding terminal to guarantee the crossing.
What should I bring in my backpack?
Sunscreen, repellent, a hat or cap, a raincoat, a flashlight (there is no street lighting on trails and more remote beaches), good walking shoes, and a bottle of water. In summer, bring light clothes; in winter, a jacket for the night. And the essential: take your trash back — the preservation of the island depends on each visitor.
Do you accept cards? Is there an ATM?
The banking infrastructure on the island is quite limited and the internet signal can fail, which sometimes prevents card or Pix payments. The recommendation is to bring enough cash for your stay, especially outside the high season.
When is the best time to visit?
It depends on your style. Summer (December to March) is ideal for the beach, with more activity and leisure options. Winter is quieter and great for hiking and nature observation. Keep an eye on the events calendar: traditional festivals like the Festa da Tainha take place throughout the year.
What are the main attractions?
The Farol das Conchas, with a panoramic view of the island; the Gruta das Encantadas and its legends; the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, an 18th-century construction; and the trails that connect the villages, passing through practically deserted beaches.
Can I bring my pet?
As it is a conservation unit with native fauna, there are restrictions on the entry of domestic animals. Check the current IAT regulations before planning your trip with your pet.
Is it possible to swim to the island?
You can get to Europe by swimming, now whether you can do it is another question.
